How to Recommit to God- 5 Practical Steps!

Scripturally, every believer is to live a life sold out to God. But can we deny the fact that it is not always easy? Hence the need to recommit to God. Can we deny the struggle between our fleshy desires and our willing spirit? The answer will be no. Sometimes we drift away from the excitement and passion we felt when we received salvation.

One thing you should avoid is wasting time beating yourself up in regret. Your next step should be how to recommit yourself back to God. This article entails making things right again and reigniting your love for Jesus. Interesting right? This article will show you biblical steps to reconnect to God.

What Does it Mean to Recommit to God?

Imagine preparing for an important exam. You have put in so much time and effort, sleepless nights, and praying consistently for the favor. Then unfortunately, on the day of the exam, you walk confidently to the exam hall, and upon opening the question paper, you find different questions from the ones you expected.

That short scenario will leave you with a rush of emotions, from surprise to confusion and disappointment. This is the reality of many Christians nowadays. The Christian journey is not always easy; there are so many bumps ahead in form of sin, trials, and temptation. Honestly, one could easily give up just for comfort or assurance.

How to Recommit to God

Despite the bumpy ride, God never writes us off. God takes us back with open arms when we feel lost. Remember the story of the prodigal son in the bible? (Luke 15) Take a close look at how the father rejoiced when he saw his haggard-looking lost son from afar. He threw a feast to celebrate his son’s return without passing ill comments.

The love of God towards his children is overwhelming, and though it breaks his heart to see us yield to the flesh sometimes or give in to our weaknesses, he will not give up on us. Hallelujah to God! Sometimes, those distractions and trials test our faith and help us emerge stronger and wiser.

Here are a few points to note about recommitting to God;

• To recommit to God means that you must have been committed to his will at a point in your life. Unfortunately, things went south, and now, you are looking for a way back to your first love, Jesus.

• Recommitting to God starts with acknowledging that you are no longer on the right path, just like the prodigal son said to himself in Luke 15:18-19 NLT;

“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home, even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,…….”

You can pick up the pieces and continue the journey of righteousness and peace with God.

• Recommitting yourself to God starts with a deep sense of humility which is a necessity. Some people lose sight of God’s kingdom when they get a miracle they have long desired. While for some, after reaching the peak of their careers, they seem so lost in their busy schedule that they forget how they used to burn for God in the past.

Coming back to God in the such case requires genuine humility. You need to accept that without God, you are nothing. You must realize that when God is out of the equation of your life, you are like a city full of gold but without walls or security.

• Recommitting to God might involve an area of your life that is lacking. You might have taken a step back in your worship of God, prayer life, or financial commitment toward his kingdom.

How to Recommit to God

We can describe recommitting to God as coming into genuine repentance. If you find yourself suddenly lacking in your prayer life, and study of the word, and you probably no longer feel excitement when it is time for church, you need to come to your first love. You are not the first to make terrible decisions, and you should remember God’s promise to you in 1 John 1:9

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Here are steps to reigniting your relationship with God;

1. Acknowledge Your Weaknesses

This is undoubtedly the first step to repentance. You must realize the areas you have fallen behind. Knowing that will give you a clear direction of where you need to put more effort and how to get rid of possible distractions that might come up in the future.

2. Give Yourself to Prayer

Do you know that a major factor that helps relationships thrive is communication? If there is little or no communication, any relationship will crumble. Prayer allows you to communicate with God, but when that is lacking, you tend to drift further away from him. Therefore, you must establish that bond between you and your heavenly father by talking to him regularly. He loves it when you bare your heart with him every day.

3. Spend Time With The Scriptures

This is another excellent way to reconnect with God. One of the ways God can speak to us is through his word. Have a bible devotion, and make sure you do more than reading or skimming. Take notes and pray in line with the scriptures. Ask the holy spirit for guidance before studying scripture, and see how you grow in the spirit.

4. Exercise Discipline

This is a major challenge for most Christians. Before we came into the light of salvation, we were so used to gratifying our flesh and giving in to our lustful desires. To keep our salvation, we must do away with all fleshy desires. Doing that can be very difficult and it calls for intentional discipline.

Perhaps you fell back into an old addiction that you managed to conquer in the past. Now that you have realized your wrongdoing, you must be ready to exercise discipline with the help of the holy spirit. Put yourself in check constantly, and like David (Psalms 63:6-8), take time to reflect on each day and think about how to make the next day better.

5. Fellowship With Other Believers And Get a Mentor

Like the bible says in Hebrews 10:25, you should endeavor to worship constantly with fellow believers in the faith. Having someone around to help you up when you are at your lowest spiritually is ineffable (proverbs 27:17).

Do not hesitate to seek out someone more spiritually mature than you are for guidance when you feel you are drifting away. And that requires that you open up and be honest about your Christian life.

Conclusion

Recommitting to God is something almost every believer has done at a point in their lives. You are not the first to make terrible decisions, so do not write yourself off. Finally, Let this be your driving force and help you make a strong decision not to let anything come between you and God.

Romans 8:38-39 NLT

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
